Sony Pictures Entertaiment Wiki

Screen Gems is an American film production and distribution studio owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment. it specializes in genre films, particularly horror, thrillers, and action movies, often with mid-range budgets.

History[]

Screen Gems has a rich and multi-phase history tied primarily to Columbia Pictures (now part of Sony Pictures Entertainment).

Early Years (1930s–1940s): Animation Division[]

The name "Screen Gems" originated in the 1930s as Columbia Pictures' in-house animation studio. Founded around 1933–1940 (after acquiring Charles Mintz's studio), it produced theatrical cartoons, including series like The Fox and the Crow, Li'l Abner, and Color Rhapsodies. It competed with bigger players like Disney and Warner Bros. but struggled with memorable characters. The animation unit shut down in 1946.

Television Era (1948–1974): Pioneering TV Production[]

In 1948, Columbia revived "Screen Gems" as its television subsidiary to enter the booming TV market. It became one of the earliest major studios in syndicated telefilm production.

In 1974, Screen Gems was renamed Columbia Pictures Television (later evolving into today's Sony Pictures Television).

Modern Revival (1998–Present): Genre Film Label[]

Sony revived the "Screen Gems" brand in 1998 as a film production and distribution label specializing in mid-budget genre films, especially horror, thrillers, and action—edgier fare compared to Columbia or TriStar.
